Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. For Scotland and Northern Ireland statistics please contact National Records Scotland and NISRA respectively.

Deaths

COVID-19 Death registrations 2020, England and Wales

Please see the downloadable dataset beneath Figure 2 of the following publication: Deaths registered weekly bulletin. This shows the number of deaths due to COVID-19 and the number of deaths involving COVID-19 between January 2020 and January 2021.

We use the term "due to" when referring to deaths where COVID-19 was recorded as the underlying cause of death.

We use the term "involving" when referring to deaths that had COVID-19 mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Please see the following summed totals from this bulletin:

  • Deaths involving COVID-19 (registered as underlying cause or as a secondary cause): 80,830

  • Deaths due to COVID-19 (registered as underlying cause): 73,444

COVID-19 deaths without pre-existing conditions, by age, England and Wales

We do not collect information on whether an individual was deemed to be part of an at-risk group as this is not supplied on the death certificate. This information is collected through NHS patient medical records. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk should you wish to obtain more information from them.

We have been producing Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales in the response to COVID-19. This publication provides a greater insight into the leading underlying causes of death groups for deaths occurring in England and Wales between March and June 2020.

Figures for COVID-19 deaths with no underlying health conditions are available on Table 5. This means where no other underlying condition was listed on the death certificate. This publication states that between March and June 2020, there have been 46,736 deaths involving COVID-19. 4,476 of these deaths had no pre-existing conditions.

The following table provides COVID-19 deaths with no pre-existing conditions by certain age brackets. This is also available in Table 6a of Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales.

In order to provide a further breakdown of this information by the requested age brackets, we would need to create bespoke analysis, which public authorities are not obligated to do under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. We therefore consider this to be information not held. Furthermore, disaggregation of this data into smaller age brackets would produce small figures, which would be disclosive.

We intend to provide an update to Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales to include COVID-19 death data with no pre-existing conditions for July to December 2020 in due course.

COVID-19 deaths with pre-existing conditions, by age, England and Wales

A full breakdown of COVID-19 deaths with pre-existing conditions by age can also be found in Table 6a of the following publication: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales.

Provisional monthly death registration data for England and Wales, broken down by sex, age and country are available in this monthly publication: Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales. This publication contains data from July onwards and includes deaths due to COVID-19 and leading causes of death. Leading causes is also available on Table 11 and includes figures for the five-year average.

Further analysis for COVID-19 deaths by pre-existing conditions by certain age groups would need to be created as bespoke analysis and is therefore not held.

Hospitalisations

The data we hold on COVID-19 hospitalisation in the following bulletin, COVID-19 weekly insights: Latest health indicators in England, are data that we receive from Public Health England (PHE). We do not hold raw data for hospitalisations and therefore do not hold the information you have requested.

Public Health England would be better placed to assist with your query. They can be contacted via email at wn_coronavirus@phe.gov.uk.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk
