You asked

I am analysing the geographical and temporal evolution of Covid cases (i.e., positive PCR results), hospitalisations and deaths. The ideal spatial granularity is that of the district council (or borough or unitary council). Is such data available? Temporal granularity -- weekly is adequate.

Thank you for your enquiry.

COVID-19 cases:

The COVID-19 Infection Survey (CIS) is a community survey which estimates the number of current COVID-19 infections within the community population; community in this instance refers to private residential households and it excludes those in hospitals, care homes or other institutional settings.

We produce regional and sub regional estimates of the percentage of people testing positive in the population at a given time. CIS sub regional areas are based on local authorities or groups of local authorities. You can find this:

In the dataset accompanying the latest bulletin you will find the latest subregional estimates for:

  • England on tab 1L
  • Wales on tab 3F
  • Northern Ireland on tab 4F
  • Scotland on tab 5F

Previous weeks data can be found in the previous versions of this dataset.

On tab 1F and 1J of the same dataset, you can find England regional estimates given daily and in non-overlapping 14-day periods respectively.

Please note these estimates are based on our survey. The total confirmed cases by area can be found on the government dashboard.

Hospitalisations:

Public Health England (PHE) are responsible for hospitalisations data and would therefore be better placed to answer this part of your request. They can be contacted via email at wn_coronavirus@phe.gov.uk.

Mortality analysis:

Unfortunately, we do not currently hold analysis showing weekly COVID-19 deaths by unitary council or borough.

However, deaths by unitary authority, region or borough in 2020 will be available to order as bespoke analysis once the data have been finalised in July 2021. Please note, this will be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate. Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and can be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

We also have the following datasets available, which may be of interest:

Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board - Office for National Statistics. This publication is updated every Tuesday.

Deaths due to COVID-19 by local area and deprivation - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk), which provides monthly deaths by MSOA. Our next publication is due to be released 22 April.
