The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is a victimisation survey, asking respondents about their experience of crime in the previous 12 months. However, the face-to-face Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) was suspended on 17 March 2020 because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Telephone-operated Crime Survey for England and Wales (TCSEW) was specifically designed to allow us to continue measuring crime during this period.
1a.) Crime by ethnic identity
The Annual Trend and Demographic tables which are published alongside our Crime in England and Wales release provides data on the prevalence of victims of crime by personal and household characteristics for May 2020 to March 2021 interviews. Specifically, Table D1 holds data on the victims of all TCSEW crime (including fraud and computer misuse) and personal crime (including fraud and computer misuse) by ethnic group. Table D3 holds data on the victims of all TCSEW crime (excluding fraud and computer misuse) and personal crime (excluding fraud and computer misuse) by ethnic group.
1b.) Violent Crime by ethnicity
We publish data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales on the victims of violent offences by ethnicity in The nature of violent crime: appendix tables, specifically Table 1: Prevalence of violence, by type of violence and personal characteristics. The latest data available on the prevalence of violence by ethnicity is for the year ending March 2020. We also present data on victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and homicide by ethnicity in the following publication datasets:
- Domestic abuse prevalence and victim characteristics tables (Table 6)
- Sexual offences prevalence and victim characteristics, England and Wales (Table 5)
- Homicide in England and Wales year ending March 2021 Appendix tables (Table 5a)
