Thank you for your request.

We publish analysis of deaths attributed to adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination in the following monthly publication: Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales.

Our data is derived from the death certificate, using information received at the point of death registration. For the vaccine to be mentioned on the death certificate the medical professional certifying the death must have believed, to the best of their knowledge, that the vaccine was part of the events that led to the death. Deaths reported as due to or involving the COVID-19 vaccination are recorded using ICD-10 code U12.9. We do not receive information on the brand of vaccination administered.

We use the term "due to" when referring only the underlying cause of death and we use the term "involving" when referring to deaths that have the specific cause mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Table 14 of our Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales provides the number of deaths either due to or involving an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine. Table 15 provides a breakdown of deaths by broad age group involving an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccination.

As of April 2023, which is the latest available analysis there have been 60 deaths involving the COVID-19 vaccination, of which 52 have adverse reaction as the underlying cause of death registered in England from March 2020 to April 2023 and 13 of these are in those under the age of 39. In Wales, there is 1 death where adverse reaction is the underlying cause of death for the same period, this was for a person aged between 50 and 59 years.
