FOI Ref: FOI-2023-1322

You asked

Please provide yearly figures for 2022 for total deaths of COVID-19 unvaccinated and vaccinated in UK.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality statistics for England and Wales, these are driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore we do not hold the requested information for the whole of the UK. You may wish to contact NRS and NISRA for further information at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We hold analysis showing monthly counts for all registered by age group from 18 years, vaccination status for all cause deaths, deaths occurring in England between 1 April 2021 and 31 December 2022. This is available in table 5 of the following publication: Deaths by vaccination status, England - Office for National Statistics.

The data are for England only. Vaccinations data for Wales are not held, as it is not yet available to be linked to the death registration data.

The annual counts for deaths of persons aged 18 and over, occurring in 2022 and registered up by 04 January 2023, England, are as follows:

All deaths: 504,251

Vaccinated: 477,792

Unvaccinated: 26,459

Source: Office for National Statistics, National Immunisation Management Service.

The number of deaths by vaccination status is difficult to interpret since it does not account for the number of people who are vaccinated. If the whole population was vaccinated, then there would be no deaths in people who are unvaccinated. Therefore, the mortality rates that we produce in the death by vaccination publication should be used rather than the number or deaths.
