FOI reference: FOI-2025-2748
You asked
Please could I request by full postcode, the amount of 0-4 year olds as shown in the 2021 census?
We said
Thank you for your request.
The only Census 2021 data available at full postcode level is a population headcount by sex. This is available from the Nomis website, which is a service run by Durham University on behalf of the Office for National Statistics. No further demographic data is published at this low level of geography due to measures in place to ensure we are protecting personal data in our published statistics. We are also unable to disclose the data under FOI. Section 39 of the Statistics and Regulation Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board (ONS) for statistical purposes that would identify and individual. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals can be identified can be identified, Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
The lowest geography for which age data are available is the output area (OA), which is a statistical geography which is made up of between 40 and 250 households and has a usually resident population between 100 and 625 persons.
Age data is available from Nomis in dataset TS007A - Age by five-year age bands. We have provided a csv file for the 4 years and under age group for all OAs in England and Wales.
You can identify which postcodes sit inside which OAs using the following lookup file on our Open Geography portal: Postcode (May 2021) to OA (2021) to LSOA to MSOA to LTLA to UTLA to RGN to CTRY (May 2021) Best Fit Lookup in EW
