FOI reference: FOI-2024-2473
You asked
Could you provide me a table showing how many children (persons aged 0-17 inclusive) there are by the ethnicity of the father and mother. For example, how many children are there with a father from X ethnicity and a mother from Y ethnicity, where X and Y are any of the 19 ethnic groups as defined here:
Not that X and Y need not be different for the purposes of this request, if possible could you provide a table where one can look at the X row and Y column to find the number of children who have X ethnicity father and Y ethnicity mother.
We said
Thank you for your freedom of information request.
Although the census does collect information about an individual's ethnic group, we do not ask respondents about the ethnic group of their parents, so we are unable to provide the information requested.
The following publication, Ethnic group within households, does look at combinations of ethnic groups within households (local authority level data can be downloaded within the article from the link in Figure 4), but we have not created breakdowns of this data by age and specific relationships.
It may be possible to commission a bespoke output which looks at the ethnic group of individuals within a household alongside the specific parent-child relationship and age of children within a household, but this would only cover children who were living with both parents at the time of the census on 21 March 2021. Please see the following link to download a copy of the order form which details the scale of charges for this service: Commissioned table service.
On receipt of your completed order form, you will be added to the waiting list. Please note that any table commissioned will have to pass our strict statistical disclosure control process to ensure there is no risk of disclosure of personal information in the table. More information on this process is available here: Protecting personal data in Census 2021 results - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)
