You asked

I am interested in key data and statistics in relation to how things have changed from 2010 to 2020 across the scope of car use, sales and trends.

Please provide the following:

  • Number of cars reported stolen to the DVLA each year from 2010 to 2020

  • Average house prices in the UK from 2010 to 2020

  • Average wage in the UK from 2010 to 2020

If possible, can I please get the data in yearly numbers, as would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request.

For the first part of your request – the number of cars reported as stolen to the DVLA each year from 2010 to 2020 – we, unfortunately, do not hold this information. This information may be sought from the Department for Transport, of which the DVLA is an executive agency. The Department for Transport may be contacted at the following e-mail address: transport.statistics@dft.gov.uk (or here is their online form for an FOI request, if this is preferable).

The ONS Centre for Crime and Justice does, however, publish statistics on the estimated number of stolen vehicles in England and Wales. The two main sources for these statistics are the Crime Survey of England and Wales (CSEW) and police-recorded crime. Note that there can be some disparity between the figures provided by these two sources. Police-recorded crime data is generally more reliable for theft of vehicles as these offences are generally well-reported to the police for insurance claims.

CSEW estimates for "Theft of vehicles" can be found in Table A1 of our Crime in England and Wales: Appendix Tables dataset, while police-recorded crime data for "Theft or unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle" can be found in Table A4. Both these tables provide a time series going back to at least 2002; the latest data is for the year-ending March 2020. Keep in mind that these data are for England and Wales only, not the whole of the UK. Estimates from both sources from the year ending March 2011 to the year ending March 2020 are shown in the following table, labelled Table 1:

If you have any questions about these data, or any further crime-related enquiries, the ONS Centre for Crime and Justice may be contacted at the following email address: CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk.

For the second part of your request – the average house prices in the UK from 2010 to 2020 – please see the following table, levelled Table 2:

These data come from the UK House Price Index, which you can find more details about here. Should you have any questions about these data, please contact hpi@ons.gov.uk.

For the final part of your request – the average wage in the UK from 2010 to 2020 – we can provide mean and median estimates derived from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE).

The ASHE, carried out in April each year, is the most comprehensive source of earnings information in the United Kingdom. ASHE is based on a 1% sample of employee jobs taken from HM Revenue and Customs' Pay As You Earn (PAYE) records. Consequently, individuals with more than one job may appear in the sample more than once.

Data for average annual earnings in the UK from 2010 to 2019 (the latest period for which data are available) can be found in the following table, labelled Table 3:

This information can also be found on our website via the following link: Mean and median gross annual earnings, April 2010 to 2019, UK.

Should you have any questions about these data, or further earnings-related queries, you may wish to contact earnings@ons.gov.uk.
