1. I would be grateful if you could supply me with UK figures of main cause of death covering 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 (to date) for the following;
Heart attack, Stroke, Cancers, Drug/Alcohol Related, Accidental, Criminal Acts, Coronavirus/Flu, COVID-19 (no underlying health issue), COVID-19 (with underlying health issue), other and overall total.
2. I would like the same information covering Scotland only.

UK data
We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
However, we can provide the following information for England and Wales for 2017-2019.
Deaths involving Heart attack, stroke, accidental death, influenza, cancers, and all cause deaths
This information is available from the Deaths Registered in England and Wales Series or available from the NOMIS Webservice.
Cause of death is coded using Version 10 of the International classification of diseases (ICD-10). Deaths with an underlying cause of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) would be assigned as follows:
- Neoplasms (Cancers) – ICD-10 code C00 – D48
- Acute myocardial infarction (Heart attack) - ICD-10 code I21
- Subarachnoid haemorrhage (stroke) –ICD-10 code I60
- Cerebral infarction (stroke) – ICD-10 code I63
- Stroke, not specified as haemorrhage or infarction – ICD-10 code I64
- Influenza -ICD-10 code J09-J11
- Accidents – ICD-10 code V01 – X59

2020/2021 Data
Alcohol-specific deaths in the UK is the latest publication available for 2020.
Within the Monthly Mortality analysis in England and Wales, we publish leading causes of death for 2020/2021 in table 11a and 11b. Further disaggregation of 2020 data will be available in NOMIS after the publication of the Deaths Registered Series in July 2021.
Deaths related to drug poisoning in England and Wales: 2020 registrations will be published in October 2021.
