Please provide information you have on deaths in England and Wales, such as the cause and location of death.

We are responsible for publishing mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales, using the information supplied on the death certificate. The most recent year for which mortality statistics are available is 2018.

Please be aware that all of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) https://icd.who.int/browse10/2014/en. From all these conditions an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Figures for the number of deaths, causes of death (tables 7 – 9) and place of occurrence (tables 10 – 11) are available in our Deaths registered in England and Wales publication:
