FOI reference: FOI-2025-3171
You asked
Please provide the number of inbound tourists we receive each year and the proportion of these tourists that rent cars.
Could I please request additional information regarding how many of these tourists that rent cars get into some sort of road accident and the cause of it e.g. "driving on the wrong side of the road", "speeding" etc.
Can I please get this information for each year for the last 10 years.
We said
Thank you for your freedom of information request.
Our tourism statistics are derived from the International Passenger Survey (IPS) and the number of inbound tourists to the UK each year from 1980 to 2023 can be found in our Overseas travel and tourism time series.
Our IPS unfortunately does not collect data on the number of tourists who hire cars, so we do not hold the specific information requested. However, a question on this topic has previously been included on the IPS for VisitBritain. The last time it was asked was 2018. VisitBritain therefore may be better placed to help with your request: Get in touch | VisitBritain.org.
The Department for Transport provide statistics for road traffic accidents in England and Wales: Road safety statistics - GOV.UK. They also may be able to assist with your query. They can be contacted via their FOI contact form.
