Deaths due to cardiac arrest

The information you have requested part of our explorable dataset available on our NOMIS webservice.

The ICD-10 codes are:

  • I46 Cardiac arrest
  • I46.9 Cardiac arrest, unspecified
  • I46.1 Sudden cardiac death, so described

Please see the download accompanying this request named 'FOI3458.xlsx'. This provides deaths due to ICD-10 codes I46, I46.1 and I46.9 for England and Wales including non-residents (described as total mortality on NOMIS) for 2016 -2020 disaggregated by 5-year age band and sex.

If you wish to extract this data, or other data from NOMIS, yourself in the future, please see the following instructions for this service:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
  • Select Age – All ages or 5-year age bands.
  • Select Gender – Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates – All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Analysis of 2021 mortality data is not yet complete. This will be published in July 2022 as part of our Death Registered Series. This to allow the data to be at its most complete and include late registrations, which are deaths that have been referred to Coroner for investigation.

However, if you do not wish to wait for this information to be published later this year, we can create a custom output using provisional 2021 data we have collected so far. This analysis are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, resources and agreements of costs). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
