Data for 2020 are based on finalised death registrations.

Data for 2021 are provisional and may be an underestimate due to registration delays. More information is available here: Impact of registration delays on mortality statistics in England and Wales.

Underlying cause of death was defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code I46.
Figures are for England and Wales and include deaths of non-residents.
Figures are based on deaths registered in 2020 and 2021. Figures include deaths that were registered by 31 Dec 2021. Figures for 2021 are provisional, so may be an underestimate due to registration delays.
