FOI REF: FOI-2023-1219

You asked

I would like to request the following data for the London Boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackey for date ranges 2002 to 2012 and 2012 to 2022:

  1. The numbers, percentage, ethnicity and gender of those affected by skin cancer, lung cancer, or asthma.

  2. The percentage of deaths amongst people having cancer.

We said

Thank you for your request.

Cancer and asthma incidence

We hold historic analysis of cancer incidence within the following analyses; however we are no longer responsible for the collection of this data.

From 2019 this analysis is now undertaken by NHS Digital, so we would recommend contacting them for further information. They can be contacted at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk

For records relating to the diagnosis of Asthma, NHS Digital would also be better placed to assist you.

Deaths where cancer is the underlying cause

The mortality data that we publish are derived from the formal process of death registration.

All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2021 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework.

There are numerous ICD-10 Version:2016 (who.int) codes related to neoplasms, which are specific to certain areas of the body. However, I have provided from our NOMIS interactive webservice the leading cause grouping of LC02 Cancer.

Please see the associated download named 'All cause and cancer deaths in Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Hackney from 2013 to 2021'.

This was extracted from our interactive webservice, NOMIS.

If you would like to use NOMIS to extract further information, please see the following instructions:

  • Select – Query data.

  • Select – Mortality statistics.

  • Select period – 2013 to 2021.

  • Select geography – England and Wales, Regional or local authority.

  • Select age – All ages or by 5-year age band.

  • Select Sex – Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates – Total deaths, rates or percentage of populations for example.

  • Select cause of death – ICD10 code or free type search available

  • Select Format – Excel or CSV file.

  • Select Query data.

2022 data will be uploaded into NOMIS in October 2023.

Note that the rate of deaths due to cancer in the population is not equivalent to the percentage of deaths among people with cancer.

For data from 2002 to 2013, we do not hold this analysis at borough level.

However, we can look to create this for you as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data are available to order. Such extracts are subject to disclosure control, legal frameworks, resource, and agreement to costs under the ONS Charging Policy.

If you would like to discuss further or to obtain a quote for this work, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
