You asked

I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information in regards to cancer diagnoses. I would like to know:

  1. How many people have been diagnosed with cancer each year for the last 5 tax years?

  2. Categorised by gender.

  3. Which three forms of cancer have the highest diagnosis rates and how many have been diagnosed with each?

We said

Thank you for your request.

Figures are presented for the number of cancer diagnoses registered in calendar years on our website:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/cancerregistrationstatisticsengland/final2016

Number of diagnoses by gender and type of cancer can be found in table 1 and the corresponding rates are available in table 2.

The information for diagnosis of cancer by tax year you have requested along with other special extracts and tabulations of cancer data for England are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).

Such enquiries should be made to: cancer.newport@ons.gov.uk.

We recommend that you contact the Cancer Analysis team directly in order to discuss your data requirements in more detail.

As the only information that can be provided is already available to you via this route, we consider that s.21(1) applies to this request and the information does not have to be supplied under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act. S.21(1) is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.
