Thank you for your request.

You have made a Freedom of Information Request asking for cancer deaths per year and native inhabitants per region for 1997 to 2016.

Cause of death for 2001 onwards has been classified using ICD-10 where, prior to this ICD-9 was used. Consequently, ICD-10 mortality data is not immediately comparable with the ICD-9 coded data, more information on this is available:

http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20160105160709/http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/vsob1/mortality-statistics--general--england-and-wales--series-dh1--discontinued-/no--34--2001/index.html

The attached document contains the number of deaths and population estimates for 1997-2015. Deaths by cause and population estimates for 2016 are not yet available and are due to be released in July/August 2017 and June 2017 respectively.

Table 1 shows the total number of deaths registered in England and Wales, 1997 to 2000, where the cause of death was coded using the ICD-9 codes 140-239 for Neoplasms.

Table 2 shows the total number of deaths registered in England and Wales, 2001 to 2015 where the cause of death was coded using the ICD-10 codes C00-D48 for Neoplasms.

Table 3 summarises regional population estimates for England and Wales 1997-2015. Further breakdown of these population estimates are available on our website:

Deaths registered in England and Wales include those whose usual residence may not be in either England or Wales. The population estimates provided are an estimate of the size of the usually resident population at the mid-year point (30 June). This is the population who have been usually resident for a period of at least 12 months, or, if they have been resident for less than this period, intend to stay for at least 12 months in total. Visitors and short term immigrants are not included, but usual residents of the UK temporarily visiting another country are included, more information on this is available:

Other special extracts and tabulations of deaths data for England and Wales are available (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate). If you require further information, you can contact the team directly at: vsob@ons.gov.uk
