I am writing to find out about the number of business openings and closures in the Reading area since 2013.
Specifically I would like to know:
For each year inclusive from 2013 to 2023 (or most recent complete data), how many businesses opened and how many businesses closed in the Reading area in each year?
How many registered businesses existed in 2013 and how many existed in 2023?

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request enquiring the number of business openings and closures in the Reading area since 2013.
For information, ONS produce an annual publication called Business Demography. The publication shows the annual change in the number of UK businesses broken down by sector of the economy.
The data you are requesting on business opening and closures are available in the accompanying datasets within the Business Demography publication. The most recent data published in November 2023 cover the years 2017 to 2022. Previous publications are available with data ranging back to 2009 on the current ONS website.
Please note there have been several changes in methodology used to compile the business demography data and these changes can be found here.
