You asked

I was wondering if you could offer me some updated figures and analysis of the business demography release of 2019 with particular attention to UK start-ups and recently founded enterprise.

I'd really appreciate it if you could offer recent data on:

  • A table of how many new businesses are starting in each UK city

  • The average wage/income in each city

  • How many roles/jobs in tech there are in each region

Thank you for your request.

  1. The business demography release of 2019 referenced in your request is the most up-to-date analysis we hold on the number of new businesses broken down to local authority/district level. Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis at a city level. This publication will be updated with 2020 data in November. The data have been taken from the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR) which contains all businesses registered for VAT and/or PAYE. Businesses below these thresholds are not included.

  2. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) produces earnings information by local authority for workplace (ASHE Table 7) and residence (ASHE Table 8).

  3. Information relating to employment by industry (SIC) code at a regional level are freely available to all via the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), estimates are published on Nomis (https://www.nomisweb.co.uk). BRES publishes employee and employment estimates at detailed geographical and industrial levels. This is the official source of employee and employment estimates by detailed geography and industry.
