Thank you for query regarding breast cancer statistics.

According to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10), breast cancer can be defined as malignant neoplasm of breast (ICD-10 code: C50) in both incidence and mortality statistics.

We publish the number of cancer tumours registered (incidence) in England in each calendar year, as part of the Cancer Statistics Registrations, England (Series MB1) release, which is produced in collaboration with Public Health England.

The latest available cancer incidence data is for 2016 and is available by 5-year age group in Table 1: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/datasets/cancerregistrationstatisticscancerregistrationstatisticsengland

Table 10 provides the total number of breast cancer diagnoses per year since 1995.

Breast cancer incidence by age group for 2010-2015 can be obtained by contacting the Cancer Analysis team at cancer.newport@ons.gov.uk. Bespoke tabulations of cancer data for England can be requested (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate).

Unfortunately, we do not hold cancer incidence data for Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales, figures for those areas can be provided by the Northern Ireland Cancer Registry, the Scottish Cancer Registry and the Welsh Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit respectively.

We also annually publish mortality as part of the Deaths registered in England and Wales (Series DR) release, with latest 2017 figures for England and Wales by cause and age group available in Table 2: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathregistrationssummarytablesenglandandwalesreferencetables

Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and the ONS charging policy, where appropriate). Enquiries should be made to Vital Statistics Outputs Branch by email to vsob@ons.gov.uk.

For deaths data for other UK countries please see the latest death statistics for Northern Ireland and the latest death statistics for Scotland.
