You asked

I have found your 'EMP13: All in Employment by industry' spreadsheet, so I know how many people work in the 'Wholesale, retail & repair of motor vehicles' industry and construction industry.

Would it be possible to receive a more detailed breakdown of these industrial sectors please for the period January to March 2010 in particular.

I also need to find out if builders merchants come under the construction industry sector or wholesale? Which sector do architects actually come under?

Thank you for your request.

For detailed industrial employee information, we recommend using the Business Register Employment Survey (BRES). BRES is an annual survey with a reference date in September and data is published according to the Standard Industrial Classification.

Please see the download accompanying this request, named 'NOMIS_Busines_Register_and_Employment_Survey_2010_Construction_Wholesale_Retail sale.xlsx', which provides the most granular data available for construction; wholesale, retail & repair of motor vehicles and elements from professional, scientific and technical activities to include architects.

This data is publicly available on our interactive webservice NOMIS. The download includes the SIC code and description. A full summary of the SIC structure is also published on the ONS website. Architects are included in 71.11 architectural activities which is in professional, scientific and technical activities. Builders merchant are in 46.73 wholesale of wood, construction materials and sanitary equipment in the wholesale, which is in wholesale, retail & repair of motor vehicles.

Employees is the more robust of the two measures and is recommended for use in analysis. Further information about BRES can be found in the following report: Quality and Methodology Information (QMI). Please note, the 2010 figures exclude businesses registered for PAYE but not for VAT, so are not continuous with BRES datasets for years after 2015. A fuller note on the inclusion of PAYE-only businesses is provided in the BRES News article published on 2 October 2017 at https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/articles/1062.aspx

We also publish CVs (measures of quality) which highlight the accuracy some of the detailed industry estimates.
