I would like to know the following:

  • The average annual salary of individuals by the following age groups:
    • people aged 19 or under
    • people aged 20-29
    • people aged 30-39
    • people aged 40-49

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding information on the average annual salaries of individuals by specific age groups.

The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE), carried out in April each year, is the most comprehensive source of earnings information in the United Kingdom. ASHE is based on a 1% sample of employee jobs taken from HM Revenue and Customs' Pay As You Earn (PAYE) records. Consequently, individuals with more than one job may appear in the sample more than once. ASHE does not cover the self-employed or employees not paid during the reference period. ASHE information relates to gross pay before tax, National Insurance or other deductions, and excludes payments in kind.

We publish median annual pay for full-time employees by age group in our Earnings and hours worked publication on the ONS website, in ASHE Table 6. However, the data you have requested has slightly different age groups in the younger groups. We have produced this cut for you for the latest year of data available, 2024. Please see the associated download with the requested age groups, named FOI-2025-2640 Median annual pay for full-time employees - Gross income by age group.
