You asked

What is the average age of those dying due to COVID-19?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

In our COVID-19 mortality publications, we use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring to deaths where that illness was recorded as the underlying cause of death.

We use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had that illness mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

We have available the following ad hoc analysis showing the average age of those who have died 'due to' and 'involving' COVID-19 for specific periods:

Due to COVID-19:

The following publication provides the mean and median ages of those dying 'due to' COVID-19 between the week ending 9 October 2020 and the week ending 1 January 2021: Average age of death (median and mean) of persons whose death was due to COVID-19 or involved COVID-19, by sex, deaths registered in week ending 9 October 2020 to week ending 1 January 2021, England and Wales

Involving COVID-19:

Average age of persons whose death involved COVID-19, by sex, England and Wales: weeks ending 8 January to 19 February 2021

Average age of death (mean) of persons from all causes and those involving COVID-19 by sex: deaths registered from week ending 13 March up to week ending 4 December 2020, England and Wales
