Annual death figures from 2014 to 2021

Could you please provide me the annual number of deaths for each year from 2014 to 2021.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality figures for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. For Scotland and Northern Ireland statistics please contact National Records Scotland and NISRA respectively.

We have recently published details of deaths in 2020 in our deaths registered series. England and Wales all-cause mortality totals for from 2014 to 2020 are available in table 1.

Here are the annual totals:

  • 2016    525,048
  • 2015    529,655
  • 2014    501,424

All cause monthly totals are available in our monthly deaths dataset, with published data available up to May 2021. Please see the totalled monthly figure for 2021.
