Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We were responsible for the production of the following publication Cancer registrations and deaths, however Public Health England (PHE) have undertaken this work since 2019. They will be better placed to answer your enquiry on Cancer incidences and prevalence. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@phe.gov.uk.

Our last release in collaboration with PHE was Cancer registration statistics, England 2017.

Deaths where cancer is the underlying cause are held on our NOMIS Webservice, which has data for England and Wales from 2013 - 2020. Underlying cause of death is coded from the death certificate using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10).

You can select by leading cause (LC02) or by full ICD-10 breakdown (Neoplasms C00-D48)  and disaggregate by sex, 5-year age group and geography.

We may be able to create further analysis as a custom output for information on deaths where cancer is the underlying cause as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
