Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding the number of Nigerians living in the UK.

According to the 2011 Census, 191,183 usual residents in England and Wales recorded their place of birth as Nigeria. In 2021, 270,768 usual residents in England and Wales recorded their place of birth as Nigeria. These data have been extracted from tables QS203EW for 2011 and TS012 for 2021 via Nomis. Nomis is a service run on behalf of the ONS by the University of Durham.

Please also see the associated downloads. These provide two datasets showing country of birth for Africa from the 2011 and 2021 Censuses. These data were also downloaded from Nomis.

The Office for National Statistics conducts the census for England and Wales, you will therefore also need to contact the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and the National Records of Scotland for their statistics to enable you to look at statistics for the United Kingdom.

If you have any queries about how to use Nomis or the data provided, please can Census.customerservices@ons.gov.uk.
