You asked

Can you please give the death rate (how many people died for every 1000 people) for the years 2019 and 2020?

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the provision of mortality statistics for England and Wales. National Records Scotland (NRS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data as you have requested for deaths per 1000 people. ONS standard mortality rates are based on deaths per 100,000 population.

ONS published annual mortality rates in an ad hoc dataset that was published on 12th January 2021: Annual deaths and mortality rates, 1938 to 2020 (provisional). Here you can see the crude mortality rates (per 100,000 population) from 1990-2020 (provisional).

More information on how we calculate mortality rates can be found in our user guide to mortality statistics guidance.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
