Set ddata Consumer price inflation consumption segment indices and price quotes

We have identified an error in the imputation of missing consumption segment indices in months where no price data are available. This error has no impact on headline Consumer Prices Index (CPI) or the Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers’ housing costs (CPIH) annual growth rates. The Retail Prices Index (RPI) is also unaffected.
This minor error has no impact on growth rates at divisional level. However, a small number of classes within two divisions have seen annual growth affected by up to 0.1 percentage points, for the periods February to June 2025. These divisions are:
furniture, household equipment and maintenance
recreation and culture
The error affects the published consumer price indices for seven seasonal consumption segments, as follows:
430358 – Electric Heater, fan/ oil/ convec/ halogen
430359 – Electric Cooling Fan, portable or free-standing
510124 – Men’s Shorts, not swimwear
510130 – Men’s Coat, 3⁄4 to Full Length
510250 – Women’s Coat
630369 – Charcoal BBQ, not disposable
630520 – Mower Electric
There are minor impacts on the price indices for these consumption segments between February and June 2025. In line with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) consumer prices revisions and correction of errors policy, we have not corrected the indices for those months. However, we have corrected this error in the July 2025 published indices and in the 2025 price quotes dataset.
The error is isolated to one specific imputation process, which has been rebuilt as part of modernising a legacy production system, and only affects seasonal consumption segments where no prices are available for some months. However, the ONS is reviewing its testing and quality assurance processes in response to this issue.

About this Dataset
Price quote data (for locally collected data only) and consumption segment indices that underpin consumer price inflation statistics, giving users access to the detailed data that are used in the construction of the UK’s inflation figures. The data are being made available for research purposes only and are not an accredited official statistic. From October 2024, private school fees and part-time education classes have been included in the consumption segment indices file. Data are broadly at the geographic level of Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) 1 (for example, South East England, West Midlands, Wales). This level of detail was chosen to ensure that no individual retailer or service provider will be able to be identified and therefore is in line with the assurances given to data providers. For the same reason, a very small number of item indices (six) are also unavailable. With effect from the January 2017 CPI publication, these data will be published on a monthly basis showing the latest month data.
