This release will include national and subnational population estimates for England and Wales, and for Scotland, and national estimates for Northern Ireland. Presented as available by administrative area, single year of age, sex and components of population change.

  • Population estimates time series dataset

    The mid-year estimates refer to the population on 30 June of the reference year and are produced in line with the standard United Nations (UN) definition for population estimates. They are the official set of population estimates for the UK and its constituent countries, the regions and counties of England, and local authorities and their equivalents.

    Quality information on the mid-year population estimates at local authority and region level for England and Wales, by age and sex.

    Interactive analysis of estimated UK population change, by geography, age and sex. Annual estimates are for mid-2011 to mid-2016.

    National and subnational mid-year population estimates for the UK and its constituent countries by administrative area, age and sex (including components of population change, median age and population density).

Methodoleg

The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:

  • meet identified user needs
  • are well explained and readily accessible
  • are produced according to sound methods
  • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest

Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.

Pre-release access list for Population estimates for UK, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland: mid-2015

The phrase 'Pre-release Access' refers to the practice whereby official statistics in their final form, and any accompanying written commentary, are made available to an eligible person in advance of their publication. The rules and principles which govern pre-release access are featured within the Pre-release Access to Official Statistics Order 2008.
