You asked

I would like to know the numbers of male and female victims of crime over the last five years. There may be information on this on your website in which case I would be grateful if you could point out the relevant tables.

Thank you for your enquiry.

We publish statistics taken from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and crimes recorded by the police. The CSEW is a face-to-face victimisation survey and is the best source of information relating to victims of crime.

The estimated number of victims of crime in the past five years for all adults can be found in Appendix table A8 of our latest quarterly 'Crime in England and Wales: year ending June 2019' publication but it does not contain the estimated number of victims of crime broken down by sex.

We do provide a breakdown of the proportion of adults who were victims of crime by sex in Table D1 of our 'Annual trend and demographics tables'. The most recent version of these tables, for the year ending March 2019, and data for previous years, can be found via the link below:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/crimeinenglandandwalesannualtrendanddemographictables/current

These estimates are based on the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW): its coverage is restricted to the population permanently resident in households in England and Wales. While it covers a broad section of victim-based crime experienced by the general population, it does not cover all offences.

If you have any crime-related queries in the future, you can email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
