You asked

Please supply statistics for deaths and seriously injured on zebra crossings since the first crossing in Slough in 1951.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry into deaths and injuries that have occurred on zebra crossings since their introduction in 1951.

We produce statistics for deaths which occur in England and Wales, using the information provided during the registration of a death. Cause of death is coded using version 10 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Whilst there are a number of ICD-10 codes related to road transport accidents, there is no specific code for deaths which occur on Zebra crossings. The cause of death is usually more specific to the circumstances of the accident rather than where it occurred.

The coroner's text on a death certificate may mention information about where a road transport accident has taken place, however we do not hold analysis showing these figures. Our reasoning for not conducting this analysis is that there is no obligation on the certifying doctor to state where the accident occurred. Therefore, in many cases, this information would be unknown. Consequently, the information obtained from this analysis would never be complete or representative.

The Department for Transport (DfT) publish national statistics for the number of injuries and deaths on Zebra crossings, in Great Britain for 2013 to 2019, which may be of more use to you:

You may also find the following information helpful:

Our interactive NOMIS webservice provides deaths involving being struck by a vehicle from 2013 -- 2020. As previously mentioned, this is not specific to accidents occurring on zebra crossings.

Please use the following ICD-10 codes depending on your requirements.

ICD-10 V02 to V04.9 -- Pedestrian injured in collision with vehicle.

ICD-10 V06  Pedestrian injured in collision with non-motor vehicle

ICD-10 V09 Pedestrian injured in other and unspecified transport accident.

Should you wish to obtain more historic data, we can produce this as a bespoke analysis. Information on deaths by specific ICD-10, geography and date  along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
