Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for publishing births statistics for births registered in England and Wales, but not in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Figures are compiled from information supplied when births are registered as part of civil registration, a legal requirement.

We have not published any statistics showing births by both marital status and ethnicity in the same table. However, in table 1 of our Births in England and Wales summary tables, we provide overall statistics (i.e. numbers, percentages and rates) on live births within and outside marriage or civil partnership in England and Wales. We also produce the number of live births by mothers marital status and area of usual residence in the United Kingdom (table 1) as well as the number of live births by ethnicity (table 8) in our Births Characteristics publication.

For further information regarding births statistics for Scotland and Northern Ireland, please contact National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency who are responsible for producing this information.

We might be able to create what you have requested for England and Wales, or something similar, as a bespoke analysis. Any such analysis would be outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate (see ONS charging policy). If this is something you would be interested in, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk so that we may discuss your enquiry further.
