Thank you for your request.

We produce baby name statistics from first names recorded when live births are registered in England and Wales as part of civil registration, a legal requirement. The statistics are based only on live births that occurred in the calendar year, as there is no public register of stillbirths. The statistics are based on the exact spelling of the name given on the birth certificate; grouping names with similar pronunciation would change the rankings and exact names are given so users can group if they wish.

The latest data available for baby names in England and Wales is for 2016.

In England and Wales in April 2016, 40 baby boys were called John; 512 baby boys were called John throughout the whole of 2016. The ratio of Johns in April 2016 compared to the whole of 2016 is therefore 40/512 = 0.078

In England and Wales in September 2016, 5 baby girls were called Tess, while fewer than 3 baby girls were called Theresa, Tracey and Tracy. Throughout the whole of 2016 49 baby girls were called Tess, 19 were called Theresa, 6 were called Tracey and 4 were called Tracy. Due to small counts we are unable to provide figures for the 21st -23rd September and have provided figures for the whole month instead.

Names with a count of 2 or less have been withheld as they are considered personal information under the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA). Section 39 of the SRSA makes it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board that would identify an individual or a body corporate. Because the disclosure of this information is prohibited by law, we find that s.44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. S.44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.
