You asked

It is reported every day by the chief medical officer and others the number of deaths from Covid-19 on the death certificate, but I cannot put that into context without knowing the total number of deaths from all causes as well.

Can you let me know where I can find the number of deaths from all causes each day on the same day the Covid-19-related deaths are announced.

I know you do a monthly review, but that is somewhat delayed course; so can you tell me where I can find the daily this all causes, not just the daily death where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

In order to provide daily deaths by all causes, we would need to create a bespoke statistical analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, you may find the following information helpful.

Please be aware that there are differences in the way COVID-19 mortality data are reported by us and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Up until July 2020, we produced a separate article looking at daily deaths produced by the us compared with death notifications reported by DHSC. Please refer to Section 7 of the ONS weekly deaths article Comparison of weekly death occurrences in England and Wales for further information.

The dataset accompanying the Provisional weekly deaths in England and Wales publication provide the number of deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) that occurred and were registered on each day in the UK by country and English regions. The specific tables of interest are titled 'COVID-19 – Daily registrations' and 'COVID-19 – Daily Occurrences'. These show geographic breakdown to regional level. This publication has an 11-day lag and differs from the figures published by Gov.uk, to allow time for the certification of death, registration of death (up to five days) and processing and coding of the death certificate. Further information on this process can be found in our User guide to mortality statistics and our Quality of mortality data during the coronavirus pandemic, England and Wales: 2020 publications.

For further information on data for Scotland and Northern Ireland, National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for these statistics. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
