Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) ambassadors from our Data Science Campus recently hosted a group of female school pupils visiting the campus for a dedicated Girls into STEM workshop.

Our ambassadors shared their energy and enthusiasm for STEM during a hands-on workshop, which included an interactive maths lesson and an introduction to coding session with our team of programmable Lego robots. The STEM ambassadors initiative is encouraging interest in STEM subjects, including data science and coding among school age children.

The Campus has 10 ambassadors among its data scientists and data analytics apprentices. The team of volunteers has supported a number of engaging outreach activities in schools, clubs and within ONS, on top of delivering the Girls into STEM workshops, which are organised in partnership with STEM Cymru.

Commenting on the initiative, Director General for Data Capability Heather Savory said:

“Through our Girls into STEM workshops we want to encourage a passion for data science, leading to greater take-up of relevant subjects in school and at university.

“Demand for STEM skills is growing and it’s important to address the low take-up of STEM subjects in girls beyond GCSE and to encourage girls to develop data science expertise.

“We are proud to help provide these opportunities alongside STEM Cymru, encouraging and enabling diversity in technology.”
