Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. We would not know where the individual contracted COVID-19 as this is not supplied on the death certificate. NHS Digital may be better placed to help. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

We have been producing the following publication in response to COVID-19: Deaths involving COVID-19, England and Wales. This publication provides a greater insight into the leading underlying causes of death groups for deaths occurring in England and Wales between March and June 2020. Figures for COVID-19 deaths with no underlying health conditions are available on table 5. This means where no other underlying condition was listed on the death certificate. Please see the following figures for Wales:

  • No pre-existing condition: Wales - 294

Figures for COVID-19 deaths where there was no other underlying condition, broken down by age and sex for Wales are available on Table 6c:

Provisional monthly death registration data for England and Wales, broken down by sex, age and country are now available in this monthly publication: Monthly mortality analysis, England and Wales. This publication contains data from July onwards and includes deaths due to COVID-19 and leading causes of death.

We are no longer publishing monthly COVID-19 deaths with details around the death such as pre-existing conditions or no underlying cause. As the number of deaths increases during the second wave, we will keep this under review; we are constantly reassessing this to see how we can continue to publish analysis to inform users.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
