Mental health problems in children can affect their overall well-being in both the immediate and longer-term. The Children’s Well-being 2015 publication includes a new measure of children’s mental ill-health. This is in response to feedback from stakeholders who identified mental health as missing from the initial set of measures for children. The new measure uses the total difficulties score from the child self-completion aspect of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) from the UK Household Longitudinal Survey (Understanding Society). This article provides an in-depth look at why mental health is an important aspect of children’s well-being, outlines the reasons why the SDQ was chosen and looks at what the data tells us about the prevalence of mental ill-health and how it relates to other factors, such as bullying and family relationships.
This article focuses on older people's well-being, loneliness and some of the risk factors associated with loneliness such as living alone, housing tenure, marital status, ill health and support networks. The ONS Measuring National Well-being programme aims to produce accepted and trusted measures of the well-being of the nation - how the UK as a whole is doing.

This release looks at the changes in human capital values in the United Kingdom between 2004 and 2014, including during the economic downturn of 2007 to 2008. It also includes analysis showing breakdowns by age, sex and education level. Human capital is the value of individuals’ skills, knowledge, abilities, social attributes, personality and health attributes. These factors enable individuals to work, and therefore produce something of economic value. It is measured as the sum of the total potential future earnings of everyone in the labour market. Working age population refers to those aged 16 to 64.
