Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:
- For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
- Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.
These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

There were 607,172 deaths registered in the UK in 2017, an increase of 1.7% from 597,206 in 2016 and the highest number registered annually since 2003.
There were 3,408 deaths registered to children aged under five years in the UK in 2017, the lowest number on record; the corresponding mortality rate was 4.5 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged since 2014.
There were 2,971 infant deaths (deaths under one year) registered in the UK in 2017, the lowest number on record; the corresponding infant mortality rate was 3.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged since 2013 and the lowest rate on record.
There were 2,131 neonatal deaths (deaths under 28 days) registered in the UK in 2017; the corresponding neonatal mortality rate was 2.8 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged from 2016 and up slightly from 2.7 between 2013 and 2015.
There were 1,070 civil partnerships formed in the UK in 2017, an increase of 2.5% from 1,044 in 2016.
UK figures for marriages, divorces and civil partnership dissolutions in 2017 are not yet available.
There were 275,395 marriages of opposite-sex couples in the UK in 2015, the latest year for which data are available; this was a decrease of 3.2% from 284,624 in 2014.
There were 118,046 divorces of opposite-sex couples in the UK in 2016, the latest year for which data are available; this was an increase of 5.0% from 112,390 in 2015.
There were 1,415 civil partnership dissolutions in the UK in 2016, the latest year for which data are available; this was an increase of 8.8% from 1,300 in 2015.
