Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Correction See correction
North Wales Police inadvertently reported a number of historical crimes to the Home Office which were included in the original release of this bulletin. Revised figures have minimal impact on the majority of crime types. However, as the correction in homicide figures changes the percentage increase at the National level, we have updated the homicide figures in the Crime in England and Wales: year ending March 2018 release. Revised figures, for year ending March 2018, are available for all crime types (including homicide) in more recent publications.

Important notes and usage information

Because of the suspension of the face-to-face CSEW on 17 March 2020, owing to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, data tables from the year ending June 2020 to the year ending March 2022 shown in this workbook also include data from the Telephone-operated Crime Survey for England and Wales (TCSEW).
