Update 3 July 2023

Output Areas. With the 24 July 2017 update the incorrect names for subgroups 4a1 and 4a2 from the original release had inadvertently been reinstated. These names have now been corrected (as per the 15 April 2015 update note below).

Update 15 September 2017

Local authority districts. Further corrections have been made to the 2011 Census data spreadsheet. Some local authorities were assigned to the wrong supergroup, group and subgroup cluster, which has now been corrected.

Update 24 July 2017

Output Areas. Errors have been found in the allocation of subgroup cluster codes and their names to 6,416 Output Areas (2.8% of all Output Areas). The affected Output Areas have been recoded.

Output Areas previously assigned to 2d2 Highly-Qualified Quaternary Workers have been recoded to 2d3 EU White-Collar Workers

Output Areas previously assigned to 2d3 EU White-Collar Workers  have been recoded to 2d2 Highly-Qualified Quaternary Workers

Output Areas previously assigned to 3d1 New EU Tech Workers have been recoded to 3d3 Old EU Tech Workers

Output Areas previously assigned to 3d2 Established Tech Workers have been recoded to 3d1 New EU Tech Workers

Output Areas previously assigned to 3d3 Old EU Tech Workers have been recoded to 3d2 Established Tech Workers

No other supporting material, such as the pen portraits or radial plots are affected. The Output Area supergroup and group allocations are unaffected by these errors.

Update 2 March 2016

Local authority districts. Corrections have been made to two Census variables in the 'Local authority census data' worksheet. The variables affected are:

  1. % Employed persons aged 16 to 74 years who work in the agriculture, forestry or fishing industry

  2. % Employed persons aged 16 to 74 years who work in the manufacturing industry

The corrections relate to Scottish local authorities only. As a result of an industry coding issue, the census data originally obtained contained 8,360 more people employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing; and 8,360 fewer people in manufacturing and distribution than the now corrected Scottish census data.

These corrections do not impact on the classification itself.

Update 15 April 2015

Output Areas. An error was found in the labelling of two census variables (numbered 32 and 33 in the supporting documentation) used in helping to define two subgroups. As a result two subgroups have now been renamed:

4a1 is now Social Renting Young Families (previously Private Renting Young Families)
4a2 is now Private Renting New Arrivals (previously Social Renting New Arrivals)

All supporting material has been updated to reflect these changes, in particular this affects references to households privately renting and socially renting in the pen portraits.

ONS apologises for any inconvenience caused.
