Deaths were included where the underlying cause was due to drug poisoning and where a drug controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 was mentioned on the death certificate. Due to the length of time it takes to complete a coroner’s inquest, it can take months or even years for a drug-related death to be registered.
