Interpretation
A household is in relative low income if they have less than 60% of the income of the average (median) household in the UK in a particular year. An annual survey of around 20,000 households estimates how many children (in the UK) live in households with an income below this level. Administrative data on benefits and earnings is then used to estimate how many children for the UK wide estimate live in each local authority in the UK.
Figures are provisional and may be subject to revision in subsequent releases.
Rates (presented as percentages) have been derived by dividing the number of children aged 0 to 15 living in low income families by the total number of children aged 0 to 15. Population figures are sourced from the mid‑2024 population estimates.
