Thank you for your query regarding transgender people in the UK.

ONS do not produce estimates of the number of transgender people living in the UK. ONS published a position paper in 2009.

This remains the current position of ONS.

Mortality data published by the Office for National Statistics is collected from the information provided at death registration and covers all deaths occurring in England and Wales. Information on whether the deceased identified as transgender is not available from this source.

Please note that the Office for National Statistics only holds data on deaths occurring in England and Wales. Figures for Scotland can be obtained from the National Records of Scotland. Figures for Northern Ireland can be obtained from the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre may be able to provide more information about surgical procedures in England. ONS do not hold this information.
