My request is relatively simple but I was unable to find the information on your website. If it is available, I will accept a link to the appropriate page or file.

For the purpose of my request, please provide the latest available official statistic.

I wish to know

a. The number of households in the UK

b. The total number of households in the UK within which there is at least one disabled person of any age

c. The total number of people over the age of 16 in the UK

d. The total number of people over the age of 16 who describe themselves as disabled.

a. The number of Households in the UK: In 2015 there were an estimated 26,994,000 Households in the UK (Source: Families and Households http://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/families/bulletins/familiesandhouseholds/2015-11-05).

b. The total number of households in the UK within which there is at least one disabled person of any age: In 2011 there were 7,744,927 households where at least 1 person has a long term health problem or disability in England and Wales. The 2011 Census recorded that there were 23,366,044 households in England and Wales in 2011. (Source: 2011 Census data, table: DC1301EW)

c. The total number of people over the age of 16 in the UK: In 2014 it was estimated that there were 51,687,577 people aged 17 and over in the UK (Source: Annual Mid-year population estimates http://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/populationestimates/bulletins/annualmidyearpopulationestimates/2015-06-25).

d. The total number of people over the age of 16 who describe themselves as disabled: In 2011 there were 9,246,964 people aged 15 and over who said that their day-to-day activities were limited in England and Wales (Source: 2011 Census data, table: LC3101EW)

You will notice that some of the data has been supplied for England and Wales rather than the UK. Although the UK censuses take place on the same day they are run separately by each National Statistics Office (Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA), National Records of Scotland (NRS), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for both England and Wales). Some UK Census tables are available from ONS but only where the questions were harmonised and only for single census topics (Quick Statistics and Key Statistics tables).
