Aim of this survey
The Office for National Statistics conducts the Monthly Survey of Building Materials: Concrete Building Blocks on behalf of the Department of Business and Trade (DBT). The information is used for monitoring trends in the construction industries.
For the benefit of industry, and the public generally, building materials information is published by DBT on their Building materials and components: monthly statistics page.
What you need to know
To complete the survey, you will need the following information:
- opening and closing stock, production and delivery figures of dense, lightweight and aerated block types
- measurements in square metres for dense and lightweight blocks, and cubic metres for aerated blocks
All information you provide is strictly confidential.

Selection criteria: UK trading businesses registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay as You Earn (PAYE) or with Companies House
Population: UK constructional and building material manufacturers
Sample: approximately 70
Frequency: monthly
Dispatch date: around the 20th of each month
Return-by date: around the 8th of each month
Dispatch and return-by dates are a guide. They are subject to change due to national holidays and weekends.
Why you were selected
Your business has been selected from a directory of businesses in the UK that are registered for VAT and/or PAYE or with Companies House. Your response ensures we represent your industry.
The Monthly Survey of Building Materials: Concrete Building Blocks is conducted under the provisions of the Statistics of Trade Act 1947. Once selected, your business is legally obliged to comply. You cannot appeal your selection.
