Thank you for your enquiry.

We publish homicide data in Table A4a of our Crime in England and Wales: Appendix tables and further breakdowns by Police Force Area in our Crime in England and Wales: Police Force Area data tables. The most recent year of data is for the year ending September 2023.

We also publish more detailed breakdowns of homicide data in our Homicide data in our Appendix tables: homicide in England and Wales tables. The most recent year of this data is for the year ending March 2023. Homicide data presented is sourced from the Home Office Homicide Index, which contains information about each homicide recorded by police in England and Wales. Table 25 presents the number of offences currently recorded as homicide by outcome for principal suspect, including where proceedings were not initiated or concluded without conviction or acquittal because the suspect died by suicide. As of 12 December 2023:

  • in the year ending March 2021 there were 20 suspects who died by suicide;

  • in the year ending March 2022 there were 23 suspects who died by suicide and;

  • in the year ending March 2023 there were 13 suspects who died by suicide.

Unfortunately, we do not hold a breakdown of these data by sex. As Homicide data are collected by the Home Office it may be helpful to contact them directly if you have any further questions about their data. They can be contacted via email at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

If you have any other questions, please email us at crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
